Rob Hall (saxophone/clarinet)
Inspired by tours of the Highlands of Scotland 'Heading North' re-affirms Rob's position as one of the major new composer/musicians in Jazz today. Still retaining the characteristic acoustic-based sound of 'Open Up', his debut CD, this album features stunning playing, strong lyrical writing, evocative and imaginative music.
Rob is acccompanied by a wonderful European line-up of players with Philipp van Endert (guitar), Dave Frankel (piano/synth), Alex Keen (acoustic bass), Paul Cavaciuti (drums)
"Engaging ... I was immediately drawn in" (Musician magazine)
"A gem ... Pat Metheny could have authorised this, and maybe might wish he had" (John Wickes, author of 'Innovations in British Jazz')
" Innovative, beautifully balanced, strong and exciting ... worth going the extra mile to hear." (Inverness Courier)
Colin the Caveman (track 3) is based on a real person known throughout the far north of Scotland by the same name. He lives in the remote Sutherland village of Durness and in the warmer months sets up home in Britain's largest cave at Smoo. Pay him a visit next time you're passing ... he'll be the one giving you a guided tour of the cave and it's offshoot tunnels. Or simply write to him : Colin the Caveman, Durness, Scotland (don't forget to ask him the story of how his jeans froze to a rock one winter as he was watching the northern lights !)
